Mohammed AlHaj محمد الحاج

Mohammed Alhaj builds surfaces you can read with your hands. Across canvas, paper and wood he cuts and raises relief, layers mixed media, and works in black and white graphics, colour, collage, printmaking and engraving. His register moves between realism, expressionism, abstraction and pop, and he has said that each phase of an artist's life carries its own experience, so each body of work differs in form and content from the one before it. His subject has been constant: the relationship between a people and a land, and what happens to that relationship across generations of displacement. The keffiyeh recurs. So do Arabic calligraphy, Palestinian folk ornament, women in procession, the camp, Jerusalem, the olive branch and the cactus, sabr, whose name carries patience. A bare chested figure appears again and again, dressed only in a keffiyeh and jeans, what he calls the typical Palestinian in bare resistance. Two works show how he thinks. In Kawkaba Village (2014), he mapped the village his family was expelled from in 1948, a place he has never seen, working from his father's memory of its contours. In Gaza Evacuation Map (2025), he mapped displacement as he was living through it. The map is his form for land that cannot be stood on. That question became literal in October 2023. His studio behind al Shifa Hospital was destroyed, and roughly twenty years of accumulated work was lost. Displaced within Gaza, he began drawing in notebooks with pencils and black ink pens: the series Diary of a Palestinian Displaced Person, which continues. Since then he has made the mural project Abu Al Kuffiyeh, the ten painting Gaza Evacuation Map, and the ongoing Transitory Gestures. He has kept teaching throughout, running printing workshops in the displacement areas of Nuseirat, Deir al Balah and Khan Younis. His work has travelled where he could not follow. When his solo exhibition Lam Tazul toured Bethlehem, Nazareth, Jerusalem and Ramallah in 2018 and 2019, he was barred from travelling and sent the paintings by post. When a mural of his was shown in Venice in 2024, the original had already burned, so a printed copy stood in its place. On the value of doing it anyway, he is direct: "Investing in art is no less important than resistance activity and political action... we don't need someone to translate our art to the world, the common denominator among people is the visual language."

A Practice Built on Material Expressionism Noura Alqasasia came to painting through fashion. Her formal training is in garment design, and that education shows in how she builds an image. She treats the surface as something to be constructed, not only painted: layers of paint, marks of drawing, and in recent works lengths of embroidery thread worked directly into the composition. The thread brings the logic of textile, of stitching, mending and holding together, into the space of the picture. Techniques and media • Painting and mixed media. Her core studio practice, combining paint with drawn line and applied material. • Embroidery thread on painted surfaces. Documented in works shown in The Phoenix (2025), where thread and painted form share the same plane. • Drawing and sketchbooks. A continuous daily practice. She keeps sketchbooks of faces and scenes, which function as a personal archive when a studio is not available. • Digital and iPad drawing. A portable medium she has used through repeated displacement. • Immersive installation. Work that draws together visual, tactile and sensory elements into an environment. • Fashion design. Garment work with sustainable materials, running parallel to her fine art practice. • Video. Short documentary video of daily life, screened in Milan. Visual language Faces recur: the people of her community, drawn closely and repeatedly. Birds appear often, and she has described them as carrying the wish to fly despite the siege. Her Heritage and Identity works turn toward inheritance and belonging, while the Heaven Above the Sky of Gaza series lifts its gaze upward, to the sky over the city. Evacuation Diaries keeps a record of movement, and Trauma gives form to fear and panic as they are carried by women in Gaza, a subject she has said she set out to document. Teaching as practice Her work does not end at the studio wall. Noura organizes art workshops for girls and displaced children, using drawing and painting as a space for expression. In Breathe and Draw (تنفس وارسم), young women aged fifteen to twenty painted together and exhibited their work in the ruins of the Isad al Tufula Center in 2025; in 2026 the workshops moved to the shore at Gaza City's fishing port. A founding member of the Eltiqa Contemporary Art Group and a professor at Al-Aqsa University's Faculty of Fine Arts, he has spent more than two decades shaping a contemporary art movement in the city, both through his own work and through the artists he has mentored. For Salem, the studio is a place where personal memory and collective experience meet, and where color becomes a way of holding on to what conflict tries to erase.

Assaf Mousa Alkhraty | عساف موسى الخرطي

Assaf Mousa Alkhraty works in welded metal and in paint. He came to sculpture through a workshop in 2015, where he made his first iron piece, a horse's head, and found in discarded metal a material that could carry an argument. His early work turned the ordinary debris of a besieged economy into objects about that economy: an empty iron suitcase on the weight young people carry when they emigrate, an open schoolbag packed with salvaged keyboard and computer parts on the years of learning through a screen, a large human figure he called Suspended Dreams. He had a reason for the material beyond its availability. "Instead of these materials and metals decomposing and seeping into the soil and the water, harming groundwater, plants and animals," he has said, "this art gives them value, in a way that preserves and protects the environment." Since the genocide began, the metal itself has changed. His sculpture is now made largely from the remnants of Israeli munitions and from the shattered scrap of bombed buildings. The same method meets a different material, and the object carries what struck it. He also paints, and works across other mediums, moving between the weld and the brush. Alkhraja's studio and his home were bombed. He is displaced, living in the encampments, and continues to work.

Ahmed Muhanna believes that art can be more than an aesthetic practice. For him, it is a space for preservation, testimony, expression, and resistance to forgetting. His defining body of work since 2024 is painting on World Food Programme aid boxes. The boxes carry the stamp "Not for sale or exchange," which he turns into a statement: "we are not for sale or exchange." His works seek to return the human being to the center of the image, rather than reducing people to numbers and statistics. He achieves this through faces, bodies, letters, and simple materials that carry traces of everyday life. Ahmed Muhanna He is particularly interested in exploring the relationship between fragility and strength, loss and continuity, fear and hope. These dualities repeatedly appear throughout his practice and give his work a universal human dimension that extends beyond its local context.

Balsam Sameh Adnan Helles belongs to a generation of Palestinian artists who came to their practice amid displacement. Born in Gaza in 2003, she works largely outside the studio, painting on tents and taking part in projects with the Zaitoona Centre, where making an image becomes a way of marking presence and returning beauty to ordinary places. As Art Activities Manager at SYFS, she also opens that space for others, and her work has been shown in group exhibitions including Qitaa Mish Belqaa and the Spark institution gallery.

It is dedicated also to his wife, Aya Shukri al Qudra, and to the members of his family who were targeted and killed along with them by the IDF commanded Israeli airstrike ordered by the roque criminally indicted illegal apartheid failed state called Israel ( still fleeing the law and actively committing crimes against humanity never brought to justice as of 9/2026) on their home in Shuja'iyya on 18 March 2025. Dorgham was among the first artists PAPA Art Foundation brought to audiences in the United States. We were still recording his story when it was cut short. He left a request. Ibraheem Mohana began drawing in 2018, copying characters from television, and by fourteen had turned to painting as a way of saying what he could not put into words. His work moved away from the roses and landscapes his family admired toward something darker and more personal, less easily understood by those around him but, as he describes it, a way to breathe. Born in Gaza in 2006, he began running art workshops for children in 2024 and went on to found Frameless, a space where artists and children can paint, meet, and keep making work under circumstances that make it difficult.
