Description
A vertical composition on white or cream paper, enclosed by a thin ruled black border. A single figure stands at the center in profile facing left, wearing a long dark garment rendered in solid black ink and a light head covering. A curved black arc passes above the head. The figure holds a long staff-like implement, and the feet are indicated with short geometric marks at the base.
Broad gray washes flank the figure on both sides and rise into a crenellated, fortress-like band across the upper register. Line work is thin and precise in the figure, the border, and the architectural elements, with noticeable variation in weight along the contours. The palette is limited to black, gray, and the white of the exposed paper, with the wash carrying most of the tonal range.
Handwritten script appears in the upper right quadrant, and a signature with what may be a date notation sits at the lower left. Neither is legible at archival resolution.

We live under the shadows of fragile tents, facing the power and tyranny of storms. We stand tall, yet isolated; we stand between ruin and hope. This work speaks of the fragility of the body under the weight of place, and of the small gesture that resists the narrative of destruction.
Preservation Notes
SUPPORT AND MEDIUM (assessed from archival photograph, 2026-09-18) Work on paper. The support reads as a white or cream art paper. Media read as black ink line with gray wash, consistent with the recorded medium "Ink and Black & White Watercolor." Watercolor remains water-sensitive indefinitely: no moisture, no wet cleaning. CONDITION AND HANDLING The photograph shows discoloration and what reads as foxing across the sheet, possible water staining or cockling at the edges, and light-toned breaks within the wash areas at upper left and center that may be paper loss, media loss, or reserved paper. This is the only record in the series where condition issues are visible at all, and it should be given priority for physical assessment by a paper conservator. Move it flat and fully supported. Do not attempt surface cleaning. RECOMMENDED DISPLAY Not recommended for display until condition is assessed. When displayed: window-mount with acid-free, lignin-free board, Japanese tissue hinges and starch paste, UV-filtering glazing. ATTRIBUTION CONFLICT, DO NOT RESOLVE WITHOUT DIRECTOR REVIEW A low-resolution reading of the lower left signature and the upper right script returns a personal name and a date in the 1920s that do not match this record's attribution to Mohammed AlHaj, and the handling differs from the rest of the "A Moment of Realization" series. This may be a misreading of the inscription, or the image asset attached here may belong to a different work. Nothing on this record has been altered. Photograph the signature and inscription areas at high resolution under raking light and review before this record is used for any public, press, or exhibition purpose. OUTSTANDING VERIFICATION 1. Year created is not recorded. 2. Dimensions are recorded as 29 x 21 cm, identical across all 24 works in the series. Likely a batch-entered default. Spot-check against the physical work. 3.
