Description

This symbolic, Cubist-inspired portrait blends identity, conflict, and duality through strong shapes, a limited color palette, and cultural motifs. The face is divided into distinct sections, suggesting two—or more—coexisting identities, reflecting the lived reality of many Palestinians worldwide. One side appears more structured and guarded, while the other is open and bold, implying inner conflict, balance, or transformation.

The colors carry layered meanings. Green around one eye symbolizes life, resilience, and hope, while mustard yellow dominates the face, conveying earthiness, endurance, and humanity. Black outlines provide strength and definition, reinforcing emotional and psychological boundaries. Red accents—visible in the neck and details—suggest pain, struggle, vitality, and resistance, while also referencing Palestinian embroidery. The keffiyeh stands as an unmistakable marker of Palestinian identity. The cactus-like form and barbed wire symbolize sumud—steadfastness—and the ongoing struggle for freedom.

Artist Notes

I was visiting the Picasso collection at the Moderna Museum in Stockholm when I saw the work Buste de femme, which depicted fragmented female faces. At that moment, the idea came to me to use a similar technique to reinterpret the work of well-known artists and transform it into something with political meaning. I then painted this face, marking it with colors and symbols that signal Palestinian identity, whether male or female.

Preservation Notes

MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION This is a physical painting, not a digital-native work. The record states the medium as acrylic on paper canvas, at 43 x 30 cm (width x height). Construction is therefore acrylic paint applied to a paper-based canvas support. The description records a Cubist-inspired portrait with the face divided into sections, built from strong black outlines and a limited palette of green, mustard yellow, black and red, with keffiyeh, cactus-like and barbed-wire motifs. No varnish, polymer sealant, mount, stretcher or frame is recorded. No statement is made here about the current physical condition of the work, as none can be supported from the record's own text. CONSERVATION REQUIREMENTS Paper and paper-canvas supports are vulnerable to cockling, edge tears and creasing. Store and display flat; never roll the work. Window-mount with acid-free, lignin-free board and hinge with Japanese tissue and starch paste. Do not dry-mount and do not use pressure-sensitive tape of any kind. Handle with support under the full sheet, keep in stable relative humidity, and avoid direct sunlight. Dust only with a soft dry brush; do not use solvents on acrylic paint films. UV-filtering glazing is recommended for any display. The saturated reds, yellows and oranges are the passages most at risk of fading, and this work's dominant mustard yellow and red accents should be monitored accordingly. DIGITAL RECORD The original capture was scanned in Sweden as a TIFF master in high, medium and low resolution variants. Those masters are held outside this archive, and the file uploaded here is a converted derivative rather than the master. CURRENT ASSET: JPEG, 630 x 883 pixels, 180 KB. Maximum reproduction size at 300 DPI is 2.9 inches on the long edge. VERY LOW resolution. WARNING: This file is a low-resolution derivative and is inadequate for print reproduction or detailed study. The high-resolution TIFF master must be sourced and uploaded before this work is sold, printed, or reproduced. Sanity accepts TIFF uploads directly, so no conversion is required; the high-resolution TIFF master should be uploaded as the primary image, with the medium and low resolution variants retained in the gallery field. The gallery field is currently unused on this record, so the medium and low resolution variants are not held anywhere in this archive. OUTSTANDING VERIFICATION 1. location is absent. The current whereabouts of the physical work must be recorded. 2. materials was empty. The entries now present were derived solely from the medium field and the description and must be confirmed against the physical work, including whether any varnish or sealant layer is present. 3. The medium "Acrylic on paper canvas" is ambiguous as to the actual support: it may be a paper sheet, a paper-faced board, or a primed fabric canvas. The description does not state the support. Physical examination is required to resolve this, because paper and fabric supports require different treatment (flat storage and hinging versus stretcher support and tension control). 4. No mounting, framing or glazing information is recorded; this must be documented before the work is moved or displayed. 5. The uploaded image is a very low resolution derivative; the high-resolution TIFF master must be located and added to the record.
