Preservation Notes

PROVISIONAL. All observations below are from inspection of the digital file. This is a born-digital work; conventional condition assessment does not apply, and the preservation concerns are file-level rather than material. DIMENSIONS CONFLICT, NEEDS RESOLVING The dimensions field records 20 x 16, a portrait ratio of 1.25. The source file is 3000 x 3000 px, exactly square. These cannot both describe the same work. Three possibilities. The recorded dimensions may describe an intended print size that differs from the digital master's aspect ratio. They may have been entered in error or carried over from another record. Or the file in the archive may be a differently cropped version of the work. Nothing in the document settles it, and the dimensions field already holds values, so nothing has been changed. The unit is also unset. For a born-digital work the archive should record pixel dimensions and, separately, any intended output size. The schema has one dimensions field, so this distinction currently cannot be expressed. TECHNIQUE Digital raster painting consistent with a layered painting workflow. Soft airbrush-style blending dominates the skin and neck, with higher-frequency detail reserved for the insect and the torn edges of the facial aperture. The smoke and hair mass reads as custom brush work with scatter and smudge dispersion, with tapered pressure-sensitive stroke ends rather than vector smoothness. Thin gold concentric ellipses and the four-point star above the head are crisply rendered with uniform stroke weight and may be vector-derived or path-stroked overlays, sitting on top of the smoke with a light additive or glow treatment. Photographic or scanned texture appears likely in two areas: the bark-like cracked surface around the opening, and the mottled grain on the garment. The jacket carries a repeating speckled pattern plus faint rectilinear grid remnants at lower right, consistent with a texture layer in an overlay or multiply blend mode that was not fully masked at the edge. A fine paper- or canvas-like grain with subtle fibre flecks runs across the whole image, consistent with a global texture overlay at low opacity. FILE QUALITY, ACTION RECOMMENDED Mild JPEG-type artifacting is visible as blocking and ringing along high-contrast transitions, particularly the gold linework against the dark smoke, the white of the visible eye, and the silhouette edge of the smoke against the flat background. The flat background shows slight banding and posterisation in the gradient with low-level mosquito noise. Dark areas inside the facial cavity show tonal crushing, with limited separation between the insect's body and the surrounding shadow. This indicates the archived file is a compressed export, not a master. For a born-digital work the layered source file and a lossless export are the preservation copies; a JPEG export is a derivative. The archive currently holds only the derivative. Requesting the master file from the artist should be treated as a preservation action, not a nicety, and the opportunity to do so may not persist. SIGNATURE A cursive gold signature sits left of centre in the lower-middle area, adjacent to the figure's neck. The letterforms are small and partly illegible at this resolution. The forename is confirmed as Ahmed by the Director of Operations, 15 October 2026, who notes PAPA holds a contract with the artist. Earlier automated readings across this collection returned both "Ahmed" and "Ahmad"; the variation is a resolution artefact and is resolved. Ahmed is the form of record. LOCATION FIELD The location field reads "Digital". That field records where the physical work currently resides. For a born-digital work the question does not apply, and the field is being used to record medium rather than location. Not corrected; the field already holds a value.
