Description
This work operates on two levels: inner identity and outward action. It depicts two distinct figures. On the right side is the father, stylized and constructed from geometric planes—triangles, rectangles, and arcs—representing life’s challenges and paths. The other figure, in black, is the mother, raising her arm and pointing toward him. Her silhouette symbolizes Palestinian women, who live in the shadows while struggling through life.
The use of color in this work is significant, as it conveys life, emotion, and vitality. In contrast, shades like teal and blue evoke calm within chaos. The combination of colors and geometric forms reflects lived experience—how one rationalizes life; while the black, silhouetted figure expresses the effort to navigate life’s complexities.
Artist Notes
This work portrays my parents. After my mother’s murder, their life became a colorful yet difficult journey a path they walked together despite everything. One day, I took up the brush and began painting them. My mother was dressed in black, the color of grief and mourning after my father’s death. The only image that came to me at that moment was of her bidding him a final farewell, one hand raised.
Preservation Notes
This piece is in impeccable condition. It is a cohesive polymer based acrylic upon a composite linen canvas. Preservation framing technique fully encased in a Conservation Clear Glass: Offers the same 99% UV protection but lacks the anti-reflective coating (prone to more glare). The Lighting should be maximized in a northern light setting with minimal direct glare positioning on the installation light production. Should be reframed and inspected for management upkeep every 5 years. Care should be applied every 5 years standard level of preservation practices applied.
