Interior with Three Fish
1979 - Present
Description
A coastal interior centered on a table bearing three stylized fish rendered in blue tones, laid across a red surface in the immediate foreground. At the left, a green-framed window with yellow panes admits warm light. The room is built from white-trimmed blue walls, brown structural beams and posts, and a decorative ornamental cornice in gold and black at the upper left. To the right sit a red-and-blue striped chair and potted plants with distinctly patterned foliage. A patterned floor in tan, red, and yellow fills the lower portion. Space is flattened and compressed in the manner of decorative and folk-inflected perspective.
Deep cobalt and ultramarine dominate, set against bold reds, warm yellows, and fresh greens, with dark brown structural elements, gold ornament, and white trim. Heavy black outlines define every major form, giving the surface a stained-glass or woodcut quality. Brushwork ranges from smooth background passages to heavily textured handling in the fish, foliage, and ornament, with visible directional marks across the blue walls. The idiom draws on Fauvism and Expressionism filtered through folk and naive traditions, with flattened space, dense patterning, and color released from naturalistic description.
Possible artist's marks appear in the lower area of the canvas but are not legible at archival resolution.
Cataloguing note: Provisional descriptive title assigned during archival restructuring. This work was previously filed as a detail shot of Gaza Fish and is a strong candidate for the fish series. Medium, dimensions, and date are unverified.
Preservation Notes
Possible signature or artist's marks in the lower canvas area require examination under raking light or magnification. Heavily textured passages in the fish and foliage should not be surface-cleaned without testing. Medium inferred from archival photograph only. This image appeared twice in the Gaza Fish gallery; the duplicate entry was removed during the September 2026 restructuring.
