Layered Landscape with Fish Skeleton
1979 - Present
Description
A stylized coastal landscape organized into stacked horizontal and angular registers. Angular sail-like forms in dark blue and navy occupy the upper band, reading as boats against the sky. The middle ground carries multiple trees in bold blue and red with simplified branching structures, and at the lower center a skeletal fish is rendered in white and gray. Geometric fields between these zones stand in for water, land, and sky.
Bold black outlines delineate each compartment, producing a pronounced stained-glass effect, while diagonal and curved black lines introduce movement across the otherwise segmented structure. The composition reads vertically from sky through landscape to water. The palette runs through cyan, navy, cobalt, and pale blue, offset by red, golden ochre, and cream, with dark brown and black contours; the red trees and the pale fish provide the sharpest focal contrast. Paint is layered with visible brushwork and a matte finish, and slight surface irregularities confirm hand application. The idiom is Cubist-Expressionist, holding geometric abstraction and recognizable figuration in balance.
No signature, date, or inscription is legible in the archival photograph.
Cataloguing note: Provisional descriptive title assigned during archival restructuring. This work was previously filed as a detail shot of Gaza Fish and is a strong candidate for the fish series. Medium, dimensions, and date are unverified.
Preservation Notes
