Description
A woman stands facing forward, centered and close to the picture plane, holding a large red pomegranate at chest height in one raised hand. Her expression is level and unhurried.
She wears a long black garment carrying dense red embroidery in geometric star and floral motifs, scattered across the body of the fabric and gathering thickly at the hem and cuffs, where red and white floral work runs in bands. A cream and red striped band encircles her head, and a black veil falls from it down her back and across her shoulders.
The ground behind her is a plain mottled beige-grey with no setting and no horizon. Nothing competes with the figure or the fruit.
The pomegranate is the only saturated form in the picture and it is held deliberately forward, offered rather than carried. Against the black of the garment and the density of the stitching, it reads less as a still-life object than as something presented for witness. Signed lower right.

Automated inspection of a related work in this collection returned Eastern European folk dress, which is very likely wrong. Palestinian tatreez shares these visual features and is the more probable tradition given the artist and the archive. The specific regional motif pattern is worth recording if it can be identified.
