Description

A woman faces the viewer in three-quarter view, her head tilted slightly, one hand raised to rest at her shoulder and neck. She wears a long-sleeved garment with a dark rectangular form at the chest.

The work is entirely monochrome. Behind and around her, loose black marks run across the upper part of the ground and down the sides, gestural and calligraphic in character, apparently script rather than abstract mark-making.

The figure is centred and fills most of the frame. The marks crowd the space around her head and shoulders without touching her.

Setting a carefully rendered figure against writing she is not reading, and that does not resolve into legibility for the viewer either, puts language in the picture as atmosphere rather than as message. Signed lower left.

MATERIAL ASSESSMENT Medium unresolved. Automated inspection described the work as a vintage black and white photograph, which is almost certainly wrong given the artist is working now. More likely a monochrome drawing or a digital work. Recorded as unconfirmed. CALLIGRAPHY, REQUIRES HUMAN READING The background carries gestural marks that appear to be Arabic script. These have NOT been transcribed or translated. Automated reading has not been attempted and should not be relied on if it is. This matters more than usual. If the marks are legible text they may carry the meaning of the work, possibly a name, a date, a place, or a line of poetry. They should be read by someone with Arabic literacy and recorded in full, with a translation, before this record is considered complete. Do not describe them as decorative until they have been read.
