Description

Acrylic and black line work on flattened cardboard aid packaging, two panels joined along a central vertical seam. The printed markings of the original packaging are left visible beneath and around the painted surface: a World Food Programme logo, the stamp "NOT FOR SALE OR EXCHANGE", a recycling symbol, and weight and product labels in English and Arabic.

The ground is divided horizontally. The upper third is pale yellow. The lower two thirds carry a brighter yellow field patterned with repeating white ornamental forms drawn from Arabic calligraphic shapes.

Twelve to thirteen figures span both zones in a loose horizontal cluster, rendered in black and gray line with cross-hatching for shading and little tonal variation. They appear in a mix of profile and frontal views at roughly consistent scale. Several have their heads obscured or replaced by large circular metal vessels. Many hold or stand beside pots and bowls. Faces that remain visible are drawn with minimal linear features. Headwear varies across the group and includes wraps and a headband. One figure at left of center wears a blue garment carrying WFP branding.

Signed lower left and dated 2025.

Record status: the artist has not supplied a title, dimensions, or a statement about this work, and the medium is recorded in his own terms. Everything described above is observable in the archived image and has not been verified against the physical work. The photograph shows foxing, discoloration, and a crease along the central seam. The concept and story portion of this field is left empty pending the artist's own words.

Artist Notes

No artist notes supplied for this work. As recorded on the parent record for this intake (97a6e785-84f8-456c-a923-12d030f3f46d), the artist had declined to add his own commentary at the time of intake. Status carried across the series and recorded 2026-09-17. Anything entered in this field must be Ahmed Muhanna's own words, quoted or summarized from a source he supplied. Do not paraphrase on his behalf.

Preservation Notes

Record provenance: separated from art record 97a6e785-84f8-456c-a923-12d030f3f46d ("Live in The AIR"), where 13 image files had been uploaded to a single record. Source file: ahmedMuhanna19.jpeg. Separation logged 2026-09-16; this provenance note added 2026-09-17. Inherited fields: location and year are inherited from the parent record and are NOT independently verified for this work. Medium ("acrylic paints on cardboard aid boxes") was confirmed by PAPA staff on 2026-09-17 as supplied directly by the artist, and is therefore treated as artist-sourced rather than inherited. Title history: the record was created as "Untitled (ahmedMuhanna19)" on separation, and retitled "As Yet Untitled -Ahmed Muhanna 19" by PAPA staff on 2026-09-17. Both are placeholders. The artist has not supplied a working title. The handle slug still reads "untitled-ahmedmuhanna19" and no longer matches the title; leave as-is if the slug has been published or linked anywhere, otherwise align it. Dimensions: Unknown. No measurement was possible at the point of capture and no dimensions were supplied with the source file. Not recoverable from the source material. Do not infer dimensions from image proportions or from the parent record. Source file fidelity: source files for this intake were transmitted from Gaza over a 2G-only wifi signal, which constrained file size and resolution. Archived master is 1600 x 1538 px, 753 KB JPEG, no EXIF. This resolution supports print at approximately 5.3 x 5.1 inches (13.5 x 13 cm) at 300 DPI. It is NOT sufficient for reproduction at or near the work's likely physical scale. If higher-fidelity capture becomes possible, the master image should be replaced and this note updated. --- RIGHTS AND REPRODUCTION --- RESOLVED POSITION, stated by PAPA's Director of Operations / Art Collection Manager (Sky) on 2026-09-17: COPYRIGHT: retained by the artist, Ahmed Muhanna. PAPA does NOT hold copyright in this work. PAPA'S GRANT: reproduction and distribution rights only. PAPA is a licensee, not a rights owner. Nothing in PAPA's grant permits sub-licensing, assignment, modification, or any use beyond reproduction and distribution unless the contract states otherwise. ARTIST REVENUE: the artist receives 100 percent of NET profits from print sales. Net, not gross. Fulfilment, platform, payment processing, and shipping costs are deducted before the artist's share is calculated. CREDIT LINE: copyright must be attributed to the artist. Recommended form "(c) Ahmed Muhanna", with PAPA credited separately as distributor rather than as rights holder. The year basis for any dated credit line is 2025, supported by the yearCreated field and by a date legible beside the signature in the primary image. CUSTODY OF THE CONTRACTS: executed contracts are held off-system by Sky, who states (2026-09-17) the combined roles of Art Collection Manager and Director of Operations. By the custodian's decision the contracts are not uploaded to this dataset. Anyone needing to consult them should contact the Art Collection Manager. Recorded on that authority; asserted in session and not independently verified by the archive. PRESERVATION RISK, CONTINUITY: the rights documentation for this work exists only outside the content lake, in the custody of a single individual. If that custody lapses, PAPA's ability to evidence its licence to reproduce is not recoverable from this archive. A second custodian, or a stored reference copy held by the foundation rather than an individual, would close this gap. Flagged as a preservation matter, not a compliance one. PUBLIC COPY CAUTION: because the artist's share is calculated on NET, public-facing material must not state or imply "100% of the sale price goes to the artist". The accurate phrasing is 100 percent of net profits. At the small print size this file supports, fulfilment cost is a large proportion of any likely sale price, so net and gross may differ substantially. Published wording must match the contract exactly. CONTRACT TERMS NOT YET TRANSCRIBED into this record, to be supplied by the custodian: date of execution, term, territory, and whether derivative print editions are expressly covered. Separately: a reproduction and distribution licence covers images. It does not by itself authorize publication of the artist's personal circumstances. See the disclosure section below, which remains governed by its own authorization. Support and surface, observed from the source image: cardboard aid packaging, two panels meeting at a central vertical seam, with printed packaging markings left visible under the artwork (WFP logo, "NOT FOR SALE OR EXCHANGE", recycling symbol, weight labels in English and Arabic). The "NOT FOR SALE OR EXCHANGE" stamp is legible in the image and would appear on any reproduction sold. Condition: the following are observations from the source image ONLY and have NOT been verified against the physical work. Apparent foxing and uneven discoloration across the yellow ground, staining in the upper portion, and a crease along the central vertical seam. Physical condition and whether the work survives: Not yet recorded. Flagged for human verification: a signature and the date 2025 appear in the lower left. On screen the signature does not clearly read as the name on the linked artist record. This may be a misreading of handwriting at the available resolution. Attribution has not been altered. Verify against the physical work or a higher-resolution scan before this record is made public or reproduced for sale. This now also bears on the credit line above. --- ARTIST CIRCUMSTANCES: AUTHORIZED DISCLOSURE --- Disclosed on the express authority of PAPA's Director of Operations (Sky), 2026-09-17, for the stated purpose of witness and testimony. At the time of this intake the artist was displaced and living in encampment conditions in Gaza. No measuring tools were available to him, which is why no dimensions accompany this work or any work in the "Life In The Air" intake. Source files were transmitted over a 2G-only wifi signal. Authorization was asserted in session and is not independently verified by the archive. The artist's own consent to publication of these circumstances is NOT recorded in this dataset and is not covered by a reproduction licence. It should be obtained and logged before any portion of this paragraph is used in public-facing material or before this record's archival status is changed from private. Deliberately NOT recorded: no address, no named site or camp, no movement history, and no family detail have been entered. Any further specificity requires a fresh, separately logged authorization. --- METADATA PROVENANCE: TAGS --- The tags "displaced", "decolonial theory", "Palestinian diaspora", "Gaza", "air", "life", "survival", "create", "live", "genocide", "justice", "love", "Ahmed Muhanna", "encampments", and "art prints" were supplied by PAPA staff (Sky, Director of Operations) on 2026-09-17 as curatorial framing. They are not the artist's own words and are not derived from the image. The artist's notes on the parent record state that he is not supplying his own commentary at this time. "art prints" was added on 2026-09-17 to mark this original for a planned print edition to be fulfilled through PAPA's e-commerce integration. THIS RECORD DOCUMENTS A UNIQUE ORIGINAL WORK ON CARDBOARD, NOT A PRINT. The edition should be modeled as its own record once a suitable document type exists, and this tag retired at that point. --- EXHIBITION HISTORY AND CUSTODY OF ORIGINALS --- Recorded 2026-09-17 on the authority of PAPA (Sky, Art Collection Manager and Director of Operations). Asserted in session; not independently verified by the archive. CONTEXT OF THE BODY OF WORK: since 2024 the artist's defining body of work has been painting on World Food Programme aid boxes. The boxes carry the printed stamp "Not for sale or exchange", which the artist turns into a statement of his own: "we are not for sale or exchange." EXHIBITION: works by this artist were shown in "Gaza: Stories of Hope and Resilience", a travelling container exhibition organised by the World Food Programme and the European Union. It toured Europe in two seasons, September to October 2025 and May to June 2026, including a showing at the Institut du monde arabe, Paris. The artist could not leave Gaza to attend. The tour closed on 28 June 2026. PROVENANCE OF THE TOURED ORIGINALS IS UNKNOWN. WFP moved the works out of Gaza by a confidential route. Ownership, custody, and current physical location following the close of the tour on 28 June 2026 HAVE NOT BEEN ESTABLISHED. ACTION REQUIRED BEFORE ANY PRINT, SALE, OR COLLECTION CLAIM: ownership, custody, and current physical location of the originals must be established first. This applies to any PAPA print edition, any sale, and any public claim that PAPA holds, houses, or represents these works. Do not proceed to commerce on this record until that is resolved and recorded here. NOT DETERMINED: whether this specific work was among those toured. The Location field on this record reads "Gaza" and was inherited at separation from the parent record. It has not been verified since the tour and may no longer be accurate. PHYSICAL SURVIVAL: the artist's studio and canvases were reported destroyed in July 2026 (source: SceneNow, July 2026). Whether this specific work survives is Not yet recorded.
