During the Nakba in 1948, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forcibly displaced from their homes, leading many to seek refuge in camps across Gaza and the West Bank. Initially living in tents, these camps gradually evolved into more permanent structures, transforming into bustling cities over the decades. Despite this adaptation, the Palestinians maintain a deep connection to their past, referring to these places as “camps” and passing down the keys to their original homes from one generation to the next as symbols of hope and remembrance.
Tragically, the cycle of displacement continues, as many found themselves yet displaced again, in Gaza after October 7th, 2023, and in the West Bank due to the continuous expansion of settlements. Forced to live in tents once more after their houses were destroyed, their struggle for identity and belonging grows ever more complex.
